In August 2003, the Vodafone-U.S. Foundation announced it would award $12 million in grants shared among the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Auburn University and the University of California at Berkeley to establish and maintain the Vodafone-U.S. Foundation Fellows Initiative. This program was developed to provide support for academics in the advancement of wireless technology. These universities are in their second year of a five year allocation of funding that will be used toward developing the wireless telecommunications engineering degree programs, with majors and concentrations in wireless technology.
One of the purposes of the Vodafone-U.S. Foundation Fellows Initiative is to create educational events that bring together Vodafone-U.S. Foundation Fellows with other top international academic and industry professionals to share knowledge and create a community of scholars dedicated to the advancement of wireless technology. For this purpose, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will host the 2005 Vodafone Wireless Technology Symposium.
This event will not be open to the public. Vodafone Fellows and Scholars will be joined by faculty and administrators from each of the universities participating in the Vodafone-U.S. Foundation Fellows Initiative and representatives of Vodafone. A limited number of invitations will be extended to industry professionals.
